Birgitta Saflund was born in Sweden, and trained as a commercial artist. She spent many years in Syria and Israel as a UN wife before settling in West Cork in the early 1970s, brought here by her love of the Irish she had met abroad.
Her passion for watercolour is inspired by its immediacy and fluidity, but she admits that as a medium it can be difficult and unforgiving until mastered. The breakthrough for her came many years ago with the gift of Japanese brushes that take an enormous amount of paint.
She says “As you become technically proficient you become free and the paint gives you back a lot more. Tightness in the work will destroy it, so you have to know what you’re doing. You have to let go and have trust – you always have the unexpected happening with watercolour”.
